Smartlead Review (2026): BAD or GOOD Cold Email Software?
What is my opinion on Smartlead.ai
Smartlead is a cold emailing at scale software 📬.
I know they have plans to expand into calling soon, but since it is not released yet, this review will focus on their emailing capabilities.
I’ve been using Smartlead for the past 2 years, only stopping my subscription when we paused cold outreach.
I think Smartlead is the best cold emailing software when it comes to protecting your email deliverability 🛡️.
That has really been their focus since the beginning, and it’s great that they haven’t lost their way like some other tools.
If you don’t reach the primary inbox of your leads, you lose, and Smartlead understands that 📥.
I’ll explain in this blog post why Smartlead is a good buy imo.
But first, let me give you my quick pros and cons.

Smartlead.ai Overview (TL;DR) |
|---|
Smartlead is a cold email software built for sending at scale without killing deliverability. 📬 Deliverability is its #1 obsession — and it shows. If you don’t hit the primary inbox, you lose. Smartlead gets that. 🔐 Unlimited email accounts + unlimited warm-up = massive scale at a low cost. 📥 A unified inbox lets you manage replies from 20, 50, or 200+ inboxes in one place. 🧠 SmartSenders give you your own email infrastructure, reducing penalties from shared IPs. ⚡ You can buy and set up dozens of email accounts fast via partners like Zapmail. 💸 Pricing starts at $37/month, with limits mainly based on active leads, not inboxes. 👍 Pros: stellar deliverability, affordable at scale, strong support, great educational content. 👎 Cons: weekend maintenance sometimes, UI/UX is functional but not sexy. 🆚 Instantly: better for beginners and UI lovers. Smartlead wins for hardcore deliverability nerds. 🆚 Lemlist: better for multichannel outreach. Smartlead wins for pure email scale. 🆚 Apollo: Apollo is all-in-one, Smartlead is superior for cold email sending. 🔗 Works great with CRMs like Breakcold and HubSpot, plus GTM tools like Clay or Findymail. 🏆 Bottom line: If you care about deliverability, scale, and price, Smartlead is one of the best cold email tools on the market. |
Pros & Cons
PROS of Smartlead
The biggest pro of Smartlead is that it is the best cold emailing software when it comes to protecting your email deliverability 🛡️.
Stellar email deliverability 📬
Fast and responsive customer support 💬
Very affordable for sending cold emails at scale
Great content to learn cold emailing 📚
You can buy cold email domains directly from Smartlead

CONS of Smartlead
The biggest con of Smartlead is its UI and UX, which can be confusing at times, especially as they constantly add more features to the platform 🎛️.
Some maintenance during the weekend, which is usually when people prepare their next campaigns ⏳
Not the most beautiful UI and UX 🎨
Frequent software maintenance on weekends, which can be annoying when you are preparing campaigns ⚠️
Key Features of Smartlead
Smartlead has many features to help you send cold emails at scale while protecting your email deliverability
Unlimited Email Accounts
In Smartlead, you can connect unlimited email accounts 🔗.
This is super powerful because other lead generation tools charge you per email account connected 💸.
With Smartlead’s approach, you can really scale the number of cold emails you send per day 📈.

Unlimited Email Warm Up
On top of having the benefits to connect unlimited email accounts, you also can have unlimited email warm up.
I remember paying tools like Warm Up Inbox in the past for $10 per mailbox to protect my email deliverability.
With Smartlead you can have 10 or 200 email addresses constantly warming up, you’ll pay the same price.
Unified Email Inbox
When you get replies from your cold emails across 20, 50, or even 200 plus different email addresses, it becomes very hard to manage all those replies 📥.
With Smartlead, you get a centralized inbox where you can handle everything from one single place.
From there, you can mark leads as interested, not interested, and many other statuses 🏷️. This tagging system is very useful because you can then build automations using Smartlead’s webhook feature. For example, you can say that when a lead is marked as interested, it triggers a Zapier automation that sends the lead to your CRM. This is exactly what I do with my own CRM, Breakcold 🔄.

SmartServers
Google and Outlook are always chasing cold emailers at scale to prevent them from reaching out to more people 🕵️♂️.
To do that, they use complex algorithms to detect which IP pool your emails are coming from.
Depending on the software you use, you may share your IP with other users on the platform. If some of them are doing spammy cold outreach, you can get penalized for no reason ⚠️.
That’s where SmartSenders can help by giving you your own email infrastructure and your own email server 🔐.
I’m using it on all my campaigns, and I’ve noticed a boost in email deliverability, or at least my email accounts are no longer decreasing in deliverability like they used to 📈.

Buying Email Accounts easily with partners like Zapmail
One of the MOST annoying things in cold emailing at scale was buying many email domains and creating many email addresses 😤.
Managing all of that was painful. Setting up 50 accounts used to take me an entire morning. Not anymore ⏱️.
Smartlead innovated early with a system that allows you to buy email accounts directly from their platform.
To achieve this, they partnered with Google Workspace and Outlook account resellers such as Zapmail 🔗.
Now, within 30 minutes, you can easily set up and buy 50 accounts 🚀.

Pre-Warmed-Up Mailboxes
If you don't have the patience to wait weeks to send cold emails to prospects, you can also buy ready to use, aka pre-warmed up mailboxes.
It's a bit more expensive, usually $45 but if you're in a hurry it's a fair price. However the downside of that is that you won't be able to control the name of the cold email domains, so beware of the impact on your brand's reputation.

Smartlead CRM
Along the way, Smartlead also released a sales CRM software.
I wouldn't call it a CRM though, it's just a sales pipeline/kanban view where you can see in the tag that they've been attributed in the unified inbox, nothing more.
From there, there's not a lot of thing you can do about it. That's why Smartlead's customers usually take a dedicated sales CRM like Breakcold, or other to manage positive replies from cold emailing.

Finding Leads in Smartlead directly
Like Lemlist and, more recently, Smartlead released their own lead database.
What’s MAD impressive about Smartlead’s lead database compared to others is that it’s free. Pretty mind blowing, I gotta say 🤯.
Basically, if you’re on a plan where you have a limit of 30K leads per month, you’ll be able to enrich as many leads as needed to run your cold email campaigns. In terms of costs, it’s a massive bold move when you know that you usually have to pay for other tools like Apollo or Findymail, which can easily add an extra $100 to $300 per month to reach out to 30K leads 📊.

The downside of Smartlead’s database is that it’s still young, so you don’t have as many filters as databases like LinkedIn Sales Navigator for example. The amount of leads is also much more limited. The risk is that you might end up reaching out to the same leads as other users on the platform, which can lead to a decrease in campaign performance ⚠️.
Other Useful Features
\
Integrations of Smartlead.ai
Smartlead hasn’t built many native integrations so far.
CRM Integrations with Breakcold & more
Breakcold integrates with Smartlead easily 🔗.
When a lead moves from sales pipeline stage A to sales pipeline stage B, you can automatically push CRM contacts into a Smartlead campaign ⚙️.
Smartlead also integrates with CRM tools like HubSpot 📥.
GTM Engineer Tools
Although those integrations are not on Smartlead’s side, GTM engineer tools like Clay or Findymail all integrate with Smartlead 🔗.
Once you’ve enriched your data using these softwares, you can push leads into a Smartlead campaign in one click ⚡️📤.
Pricing
Smartlead’s pricing starts at **$39 **per month 💵.
With that plan, you can connect unlimited email accounts with unlimited email warm up 🔥.
The only real limitation in higher plans is the number of active leads you can have at once in your Smartlead account.
For example, if you need to reach out to 15,000 new leads every month with two emails per lead, you will probably need a Smartlead plan that supports 20,000 to 30,000 leads 📊.
The reason is that along the way, you will want to keep positive replies active and let go of leads that bounced or that you added to your block list.
As a result, over time, you will have leads that simply take up your total active leads limit ⏳.

How Smartlead compares to its biggest competitors?
Smartlead has many competitors and is fighting in one of the biggest SaaS industries on the world.
Smartlead vs. Instantly
Instantly is the biggest competitor of Smartlead.
Smartlead started a little bit after Instantly and can be considered the challenger here ⚔️.
While Instantly decided to adopt a polished UI and UX and go after a broad audience, Smartlead chose to focus on email deliverability and become the most scalable tool for lead generation agencies 📬.
The way I see it, both tools are extremely powerful.
It’s like picking between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Both teams are incredibly strong, but they deliver different values ⚽️.
What I notice in the market is that veteran growth and lead generation agency founders tend to prefer Smartlead. Since these people are obsessed with email deliverability and stability, we can assume Smartlead has a slight edge for heavy cold emailers.
If you’re new to cold emailing, then Instantly might be a better fit.
Either way, don’t forget to integrate those tools with Breakcold CRM 😉.
Smartlead vs Lemlist
Lemlist has a different mindset than Smartlead.
Lemlist is aimed at sales teams doing sniper cold outreach using phone, email, and LinkedIn 🎯. They even coined it as "Smartbound".
Smartlead is aimed at cold emailing at scale 📬.
So if your goal is to do multi channel outreach, Lemlist wins 🔀.
If your goal is to send as many cold emails as possible with a limited budget, Smartlead wins 💰.
Smartlead vs. Apollo
Apollo is an all-in-one sales tool with a very strong lead database.
Similarly to Lemlist, Smartlead will lose if you need a more well-rounded tool for your sales team.
However, Smartlead is much better to send cold emails, no doubts.
