Close story
Close (originally Close.io) was founded by Steli Efti in 2013, went through Y Combinator and grew through the YC portfolio. The team stayed bootstrapped and now runs a serious sales CRM with calling, SMS, sequences, automation and an AI sales agent called Chloe baked in.
If you sell on the phone, Close is one of the best products on the market. The power dialer is genuinely strong, the call recording, coaching and disposition flows are all polished, and the SMS side is right there with it. Steli also writes more honest content about cold calling than most CRM CEOs combined.
Close vs Breakcold in 2026
The honest split is the channel mix. Close is a calling first CRM. The whole product is designed around dial, leave voicemail, send SMS, log it. Breakcold is built for the way most SMB sales teams actually work in 2026: LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Telegram, email, calls and meetings all syncing on their own into one unified inbox, with conversations stitched to the right record without anyone touching a button.
If your average deal still closes by phone, Close wins. If your prospects reply faster on LinkedIn DMs, you live on WhatsApp threads with founders, or your sales motion is multichannel by default, Breakcold is the better answer.
The AI agent and MCP angle
Both products ship MCP servers, so AI agents can connect. The thing that matters for SMB sales teams is what the MCP exposes, not the raw tool count. Close's MCP focuses on records, calls and emails. Breakcold's MCP exposes the full multichannel inbox to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and 14 other AI clients, so an agent can read a LinkedIn thread, reply on WhatsApp, schedule a meeting and update the deal in one go.
On the AI surface itself, Close ships Chloe as a packaged sales agent. Breakcold takes a different bet: instead of one agent, we make the CRM bring your own agent friendly through a deep MCP with 50 plus tools. The same setup works for an internal team using Claude Code, a Cowork Skill or any AI client you already pay for.
Close pricing vs Breakcold pricing
Close charges per seat. Solo is $9, Essentials $35, Growth $99 (annual) or $119 (monthly), Scale $139, with calling and SMS billed on top as usage. A 5 person team on Close Growth lands around $495 per month before any calling minutes, $595 on monthly billing, $695 on Scale.
Breakcold is $59 per month for the base plan with one seat and one channel account included, plus unlimited enrichment. Extra seats are $10 per month, extra accounts are $10 per month. A 5 person team on Breakcold is $59 + 4 x $10 = $99 per month, every channel in, no usage meter.
When to pick Close over Breakcold
If you are a phone first sales team, your dialer is your day, and you do not need LinkedIn, WhatsApp or Telegram in the inbox, pick Close. They will serve you better than us on that motion.
If you sell across channels, want AI agents that can read every conversation, and prefer a flat $99 per month for a 5 person team over $495 plus call minutes, pick Breakcold. For the full breakdown, read our cold outreach software round up or our AI sales CRM overview.
